West Medical Center Regional West Medical Center is an acute care hospital serving western Nebraska, eastern Wyoming, northeastern Colorado and southwestern South Dakota. It is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and verified by the American College of Surgeons as one of only three Level II Trauma Centers in Nebraska.
The active medical staff of 99 physicians represent more than 40 medical specialties and/or interests. Regional West has a formal affiliation with the Heart Center of the Rockies and the Colorado Neurological Institute. Regional West serves as the tertiary care provider for trauma services for the entire Nebraska Panhandle and Goshen County in eastern Wyoming. Board-certified physicians staff the emergency department 24-hours-a-day. The department treats more than 11,000 patients each year. Through the Emergency Care Network and with the support of the Regional West Foundation, a state-of-the-art communications system links hospitals and emergency care providers throughout the region.
Air Link, the emergency medical helicopter service based at the hospital, plays a key role in providing rapid transport and access to advanced life support. Air Link is staffed by registered nurses and paramedics trained in critical care, who work under the medical direction of the chief of trauma and medical director of emergency services.
The 20-bed Critical Care Unit, equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring technology, provides intensive medical care to trauma, surgical, neurologic, medical, pediatric, and ventilator patients. The Coronary Care Unit is affiliated with the Heart Center of the Rockies. Regional West also provides Level II neonatal intensive care for newborns and infants.
Regional West’s Radiology Department offers fixed-site magnetic resonance imaging, computerized axial tomography, angiography, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine. The American College of Radiology accredits the mammography program.
Since 1986, the Cancer Treatment Center has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a Community Hospital Cancer Program. It is affiliated with a JCAHO-accredited, Medicare-approved hospice program, which was initially developed as part of the oncology department at Regional West.
Behavioral Health Services provides a full continuum of mental health care. Services include outpatient therapy for families, couples, and individuals of all ages; treatment for adolescents and adults suffering from chemical abuse/dependency problems; day treatment programs for children, adolescents, and adults; residential care for children and adolescents; and intensive inpatient treatment for adolescents and adults. Satellite outpatient clinics are located in various communities throughout the region.
Regional West Home Care, accredited by the JVAHO, provides medical care in patients’ homes. Services include post-surgical wound dressings; wound care; infusion of antibiotics through intravenous administrations; medication checks; post-hospitalization evaluation and care; rehabilitation services and aide services.
Through affiliation with numerous academic institutions, Regional West Medical Center provides clinical training for a variety of health care professions.
Regional West’s School of Radiologic Technology was founded in 1951. This hospital-based, two-year program is the only radiographer education program in Western Nebraska. The school has an affiliation agreement with Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. The school recently received eight years of continuing re-accreditation by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. This is the highest accreditation that a radiography program can attain.
Regional West serves as a training site for a family practice residency program developed in cooperation with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. It offers a Rural Training Track as part of UNMC’s Family Practice Residency Program. Following one year of training at the medical center in Omaha, second and third year residents move to Scottsbluff to complete their family practice residency.
Other clinical training programs provided by Regional West Medical Center include: nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language pathology, dietetics, med. tech, social work and pharmacology. In addition to comprehensive health care services, Regional West offers independent and assisted living apartments for senior citizens. The Village at Regional West is a retirement community for independent adults 55 years of age or older. It is located adjacent to Regional West Medical Center. Panhandle
Community Services Panhandle Community Services (PCS) provides a wide range of health & human services in the central and southern panhandle and offers a sliding scale fee system. The PCS Health Center offers primary medical and dental care, with two family practice physicians, two dentists, a physicians’ assistant, two nurse practitioners, and various other medical personnel, including lab and x-ray techs and nutrition counselors.
In addition, the Health Center is home to the WIC Program, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, HIV/AIDS testing, Reproductive Health Services, Immunizations, the Diabetes Control Program, Maternal and Child Health Services, and the Migrant Health Program. PCS works closely with Kids’ Connection, a program for uninsured children and can provide presumptive eligibility services.
PCS Head Start Program provides health service to the Head Start children and their families. PCS staff work with the Children’s Outreach Program to provide visitation to families of newborns and with Breath for Baby, which provides health information to reduce tobacco use by parents.
Included under the PCS umbrella are a number of other human service programs, including youth services, housing services, and community and family services.
Panhandle
Mental Health Center The Panhandle Mental Health Center offers community mental health services to 11 counties in Western Nebraska. Outpatient, intensive outpatient, inpatient, substance abuse treatment, and emergency services are provided. The Center’s focus is to aid those experiencing, or who have experienced, family or marital problems, anxiety and/or depression, grief, confusion, and trauma. It specializes in the treatment of anger and domestic problems, as well as the variety of symptoms children may experience. In addition, the Center provides psycho-educational workshops, consultation to other agencies, psychological assessments, and psychiatric services, including evaluation and medication checks. The Community Health Nursing & Education division provides immunization clinics, AIDS/HIV testing and counseling, blood pressure screenings, school nursing, child abuse and neglect counseling, tuberculosis testing, communicable disease investigation and control, home visits, health education, and health services to the county jail. The Environmental Health division provides advice on private water supplies, sewage disposal, refuse disposal, pest control, indoor air quality, and miscellaneous services. School inspections, mobile home park inspections, public swimming pool inspections, and child care home inspections are performed by the division. Heritage Health Care Center was built in 1966 and is a licensed “Skilled Care Facility,” accredited by the State of Nebraska. Located in Gering, it has a capacity of 101 residents currently. Medical services are provided as needed.
Northfield Villa is also located in Gering and is a nonprofit company owned and operated by Northfield Retirement Communities. The facility opened in 1974 and currently offers 145 apartments.
The Residency in Scottsbluff is also owned and operated by Northfield Retirement Communities. This facility opened in 1993 and offers 94 apartments. Both Northfield Villa and The Residency offer life care, with 24 hour licensed nursing and worry-free apartment dwelling.
Beverly Healthcare in Scottsbluff is a 188-bed “Skilled Facility,” certified by Medicare and Medicaid. Twenty-four hour nursing services are provided, along with an expanding rehab department that includes physical, occupational, speech, and respiratory therapies. A registered dietician and recreational therapist are also on staff, and an audiologist and psychologist are available when necessary.
The Village at Regional West is a retirement community for independent adults 55 years of age or older, adjacent to Regional West Medical Center. The facility has 100 independent and dependent living apartments that provide residents with three levels of care. Meals, basic housekeeping, and laundry services are available for those who require them, and pets are allowed in designated apartments. The Village is also handicapped accessible.
Emerald Court in Scottsbluff is a facility specializing in Alzheimer’s and Dementia care and offers private and semi-private rooms with a 24-hour professional nursing staff.
Chimney Rock Villa is located in Bayard and offers occupational, physical, and speech therapy. A registered dietician is also available.
Mitchell Care Center, located in Mitchell, offers a restorative care program and “Meals On Wheels” to non-residents.
Western Nebraska Veteran’s Home is a division of the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services System. The home is licensed for 50 skilled beds and 90 residential care beds. Those eligible for admission include veterans, veterans'’wives or widows, and Gold Star Parents. Application for admission is made through the Scotts Bluff County Veteran’s Service officers. The facility is committed to quality of life, by providing the services of a physician, pharmacist, dentist, and dietician, as well as speech, occupational, and physical therapy. Other medical and religious needs are available, as well as select menus and varied activities.
