REGIONAL SERVICE HUB:

The communities of Scottsbluff and Gering, Nebraska are a primary service hub for eleven Nebraska counties and two Wyoming counties (Goshen & Laramie) . The primary retail trade area extends 36 miles southeast, 20 miles west, 23 miles northeast, and 45 miles north. The population for the primary trade area is approximately 50,000.

The secondary trade area extends west to Wheatland, Wyoming, north to Harrison and Crawford, Nebraska, east to Oshkosh, Nebraska, and south to Kimball, Nebraska. Approximately 125,000 customers are served in this secondary trade area.

Scottsbluff/Gering is the regional center for agriculture and livestock production, food processing, manufacturing, medical services, information technology, finance, human services, retailing, education, tourism, and recreation.  The Front Range region of Colorado and Wyoming are within two hours drive, and the Black Hills of South Dakota are within a half day's drive.

More than 1,500 retail businesses and professional services in Scotts Bluff County were responsible for annual net taxable retail sales of $354,840,140 in 2002. More than 150 wholesale firms in the area distribute groceries, agricultural products, automotive, electrical, electronic & plumbing supplies, beverages, hardware, and farm equipment.

Primary Retail Trade Area

 

MAJOR TRAFFIC AREAS/COUNT

There are 9 shopping districts in the Scottsbluff/Gering area: Monument Mall in Scottsbluff, Downtown Scottsbluff, Downtown Gering, East Overland in Scottsbluff, West 27th Street in Scottsbluff, the Wal-Mart Super Store and Home Depot shopping center at the corner of Highways 71 and 26 in Scottsbluff, the Highway 26 Corridor in Scottsbluff, the Scottsbluff Bypass, and the “strip mall” in Gering. Additionally, there are several other centrally located smallershopping areas, that house Albertson's, Starbucks, and Auto Zone.

The largest shopping district is along the Highway 26 Corridor, with the Monument Mall, Big K (K-Mart), Target, Staples, and Carr-Trumbull Do-It Center.

Monument Mall opened in 1986 and has more than half a million shoppers each year. The daily average is 15,000 shoppers. The Mall offers over 40 specialty shops and two department stores (Herberger’s and J.C. Penny’s). There are restaurants, food vendors, a book store, and several clothing stores, as well as a six-plex movie theatre and a game arcade.

Wal-Mart opened their Super Center in October 2002.  It is located on the southwest corner of Highways 26 and 71 in Scottsbluff.  With more than 200,000 square feet of retail space, this shopping center boasts a Tire & Lube Express and McDonald's, as well as a vision center, hair salon, portrait studio, deli, pharmacy, and a one hour photo-processing lab.  Other businesses located in the shopping center include Home Depot, Radio Shack, Payless Shoes and Sonic.  Sears is also located adjacent to Home Depot.
